Notice date 3/7/2011
7th Edition Residential code The 7th Edition of the Mass state building code is in transition. Building permits pulled between 2/4/11 and 7/4/11 can use either the 7th or 8th edition code. All state exams which use the residential code will use the 7th edition until 7/4/11. After that date, all testing will use the 8th edition.
The 7th edition is in a blue cover and has the following on the cover. Commonwealth of Massachusetts State Building Code One and Two Family Dwelling
8th Edition Residential code The 8th Edition of the Mass state building code is comprised of two books. The code is being supplied by the ICC. The amendments are being supplied by the Secretary of State. We recommend using the loose leaf binder version so that the amendments can be incorporated into the code book.
The 8th edition code is in a shiny blue cover and has the following on the cover. IRC INTERNATIONAL RESIDENTIAL CODE FOR ONE AND TWO FAMILY DWELLINGS 2009
<This is what it looks like!
8th Edition Commercial code The 8th Edition of the Mass state building code is comprised of two books. The code is being supplied by the ICC. The amendments are being supplied by the Secretary of State. We recommend using the loose leaf binder version so that the amendments can be incorporated into the code book. Please note: The 7th edition Mass code was discontinued on 1/7/11. If you have a Mass Commercial code book and it is in a reddish-maroon colored cover, it is a throw away. The only reason you may still use this book is if you have an existing building permit which was pulled using 7th edition code.
The 8th edition code is in a shiny blue cover and has the following on the cover. IBC INTERNATIONAL BUILDING CODE 2009
- The unrestricted CSL classes starting in April will use the 7th edition Residential and 8th edition Commercial code books.
- The unrestricted CSL classes starting in July will use the 8th edition Residential and 8th edition Commercial code books.
NOTE: The 7th edition Residential code book has been in use since April, 2007. There have been many, many, many updates to this book. If your book is older than 2009, we recommend you not use it for testing. We have the newer up dates and will give them to you. No need to purchase a new book. The first page of the book has a bar code in the lower left corner of the page. Above it reads “compiled in full force and effect”. That date is the date of printing and includes all previous updates.
Amendments to IRC and IBC are available for sale and can be ordered from the State Book Store through their web site at www.sec.state.ma.us/spr, or call 1-617-727-2834.
